- The Historical Path of ISARC

The first ISARC was held in Pittsburgh, where speakers made all the presentations from only three nations, United States, Japan, and Finland. In 1984, this event, organized by the Carnegie-Mellon University had a Workshop Structure, and it was called "Robotics in Construction". Both the first and second symposiums were held in the form of a Workshop Conference in Pittsburgh. ISARC was born here in this way.

The first ISARC in the form of symposium was held in 1986 in Marseille, France, and it was entitled "International Joint Conference on CAD and Robotics in Architecture and Construction". Followed the fourth ISARC in Haifa, Israel entitled "International Symposium on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Building Construction". The fifth was held in Japan, entitled "International Symposium on Robotics in Construction", where the current form of ISARC was more or less established. At this symposium, automation in construction was extensively discussed. This gave birth to the ISARC as we now know it and thus from the 6th symposium held in San Francisco in 1989, ISARC has continued the same tradition... One of the biggest symposium was the 13th ISARC, held in Tokyo 1996: 118 articles, 350 participants, and 20 participating countries. The last ISARC was held in Washington in 2002. ISARC has indeed come a long way! 1700 articles have accumulated since then, representing diversified domains of application.

At the first Workshop Conference, held in Pittsburgh in 1984, Professor Sangrey noted that the scope of robotics applications was defined broadly to include not only mechanical systems, but also computer integrated construction and knowledge-based expert systems". He continued to say, "Robotics in construction represents one of a group of related applications for robotics in unstructured environments. Applications in agriculture, mining, undersea, space, hazardous environment and others are included with construction".
