The 8th ISARC was held in Stuttgart between the 3rd and 5th June 1991 and, in line with its predecessors, proved to be a very interesting and informative event with over 300 participants from some 27 countries. Particularly interesting was the increased participation from countries in Eastern Europe.

- Topics covered in the 3 sessions:
  • Automation in Related Areas
  • Automation in Tunnelling
  • Components for Construction Robots
  • Handling and Handling Systems

  • Automated Masonry
  • Automation in Earthworks
  • Concrete and Steel
  • Expert Systems

  • Computer Simulation
  • High Pressure Water Applications
  • Market and Economic Implications
  • Public Funding
  • Quality Control
  • Road Construction
  • Social Aspects
  • Supervision and Control
The Russian contingent was the third largest after Germany and Japan and there were also delegates from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania. Also noteworthy was the strength of the industrial participation, both as delegates to the symposium and in the form of papers describing systems already or about to be deployed.

During the three days of the symposium over 100 papers were presented in the course of the Plenary session and the 28 technical sessions covering a wide range of subject areas (see above). The quality and standard of the papers was high and presented both new ideas and developments and reported on the progress of work presented at earlier symposia. On the basis of this evidence, interest in construction automation and robotics is growing and the subject is continuing to develop strongly.

In addition to the technical sessions a series of video presentations were made covering a wide range of topics and showing certain of the systems described in action. The symposium was accompanied by a small exhibition at which items of plant were displayed.

Away from the technical sessions a supporting social programme provided those participating in the symposium with an opportunity to see some of the area around Stuttgart and, in particular, with a chance to sample some of the local wines!
