In May 1994, the 11th annual International Symposium on Automation and Robotics in Construction (ISARC) was held in Brighton, England. Our appreciation goes to the organisers of this very successful event. For those who could not attend, this issue of the IAARC Newsletter contains selected excerpts from the three award winning papers. Over the last several years, the ISARC proceedings have reflected the steady maturing of construction automation, as the percentage of papers describing prototype and commercial systems has visibly increased.
The latest proceedings also reflect the balanced and integrated nature of IAARC. Included are papers from industry, government, and academia. Topics range from abstract models to descriptions of complex, commercial systems. Session groupings include strategy and economics, road construction, masonry construction, excavation, CAD/CAM innovations and applications, planning and control systems, measurement and guidance systems, and many others.
The proceedings are an invaluable source of information for those interested in the growing field of construction automation. They are referenced as:
