ISARC 2004 - a follow-up

ISARC 2004 was successfully held in the beautiful Jeju Island during September 21~25 2004. The total number of presented papers was 131 from 22 different countries including USA, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Canada, Finland, Israel, Poland, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and about 200 people attended the symposium. Following figures show the percentage of the number of the papers in the proceeding and visitors of the symposium.

Several plenary sessions were presented during the symposium. The keynotes sessions were presented during the symposium by Dr Carl T. Haas (UT Austin, "Sensors and Sensor Networks"), Yusuke Yamazaki (Shimiz Co., "Future Innovative Construction Technologies"), and In-So Kwon (KAIST, "3D Vision Systems and Applications to Photo-realistic Scene Resolution). Moreover, the current state of the art on automation and robotics in construction was presented such as wireless communication technologies (GPS, RFID, MEMS), physical construction automation (PHC Piling Automation, Road Maintenance Automation, Curtain Wall Installation Automation), IT in construction (Discrete event Simulation, Virtual Reality Technology), and potential availability of Humanoid Robot technology in the symposium. ISARC is not only an academic research symposium, but also the intermediate for the industry.

Numerous companies from the various countries actively participated during the ISARC 2004 including Shimiz (Japan), Kajima (Japan), Konoike Construction (Japan), Larsen & Toubro Construction Group(India), Strategic Project Solutions. Inc. (USA), Daewoo E&C (Korea), LG E&C (Korea), Samsung Corp.(Korea), POSCO E&C (Korea), Doosan Develop. (Korea), Daelim Industrial Co. (Korea), and Dongbu Corp. (Korea). The banquet was held in the Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel. During the banquet, the best paper and Tucker-Hasegawa award were granted to the winners. ISARC Participants visited Jeju World Cup Stadium and International Convention Center, which are the most monumental construction projects in Jeju, on their technical tour.
