Abstract:

Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) offers a structured methodology to improve construction project outcomes through planning alignment and work packaging. However, AWP implementation itself encounters obstacles related to information security, access controls, and supply chain optimization. As an emerging technology with innate capabilities around decentralization, security, and transparency, blockchain holds promise in addressing these barriers. This paper puts forth a framework for an integrated blockchain-supported AWP system to enhance construction project delivery. The proposed three-stage framework maps key AWP activities in conceptual planning, detailed engineering, and site execution to blockchain tools for strengthened information flows, analytics, and coordination. A case study of a firm’s digitalization efforts provides real-world context. By bridging AWP and blockchain, this research aims to spur innovation at the intersection of project management philosophies and next-generation technologies.
