A New GPS-Based Guiding System for Compactors

The paper is about a novel operator-aiding system, specially designed for the road compactors, in the frame of a European project called “Computer Integrated Road Construction". After having recalled the main objectives, which are closely related to the mechanical quality of the road, the paper gives a general overview of the system, composed of three sub-systems : the ground sub-system, the positioning sub-system and the on-board sub-system. Then each sub-system is described, from requirements, design and realisation points of view. A special emphasis is given to the description of the Man-Machine-Interface which is of high importance for the success of the project. In the conclusion are indicated the conditions of presentation of this product, during the Munich BAUMA fair, and the development of the second product of the progect is mentioned.
