Abstract:

Current surface preparation and coating application techniques for large scale steel structures, such as storage tanks, are problematic because they expose workers to substantial safety hazards, extend construction and maintenance schedules, and generate significant expense for owners. In order to help mitigate these impacts, a partially automated system to perform blast cleaning and painting operations is under development at the University of Texas. This paper serve to outline the justification for producing such a machine, explain the process by which the system was developed, and provide a preliminary assessment of the prototype device’s performance and potential impact in the coating industry.
