The current state of robotic technology is briefly reviewed with a view to establish what developments need to take place to enable the fully integrated site of the future. A scenario is presented depicting how such a project could be organised from tender stage to completion and implications are drawn from this. It is concluded that such a scenario could become reality using largely current technology, but that the real barrier to implementation involve issues of management, organisation and attitude. A proposal for an international test-bed site is made.
